Factory Shipping a New Cirrus Aircraft Vs. Ferrying

Q: Why ferry a New Cirrus Aircraft?

A: It costs less to ferry a Cirrus Aircraft Vs. factory shipping it to a Cirrus Assembly Center. When you add the time in transit ocean freight and assembly time it is quicker to ferry the Cirrus Aircraft than have one shipped.

Q: How much does it cost for factory aircraft shipment?

A: The Cirrus factory charges an Estimated $28,995+ (Currently $22,500 + Re-Assembly Charge) to ship and assemble a new aircraft at a Cirrus Factory Re-Assembly Center. As of 2014 There are currently only 2 Cirrus Re-Assembly Centers China & Austrailia. You will also need to ferry the aircraft the rest of the way adding aditional costs.. See Image Below Form 2010 Cirrus Order Form.

Q: How Much Does it cost to ferry a Cirrus Aircraft

A: We will use Australia, Japan for an example, IFF's Current flat rate all inclusive no additional cost ferry service from lower 48 USA to Australia or Japan. "New Cirrus Aircraft" (Contact IFF for other locations with flat all inclusive no additional rates) Pricing Valid: 05/20/2014

Cirrus SR20 $22,800
Cirrus SR22 $24,800

Cirrus Factory will generally provide buyer with an Export Certificate of Airworthiness on New Aircraft

Q: Do The Ferry Tanks Harm or Damage The Aircraft.

A: No the Ferry Tank Installation will not harm or damage the aircraft. We take exceptional care to protect all interior and exterior surfaces of the aircraft for tank installations.

Q: How much time will be placed on a new cirrus aircraft for ferrying.

A: Time will vary depending upon the destination. We will use Australia, Japan for an example the ferry time is between 60-70 hours from the factory depending on weather conditions. The first leg Duluth, MN to our tanking facility in Mulino Oregon (4S9) is the break in leg for the engine and to workout any of the bugs in the airframe and avionics. If a discrepancy is encountered we have a local cirrus service center available to take care of the issue.

Shipping a Used Cirrus Aircraft Vs. Ferrying

Q: Why ferry a Used Cirrus Aircraft?

A: Due to the Factory Bonding of the Horizontal Stabilizer to the Fuselage during factory assembly it cannot be packed in a container without extensive composite work removing the Horizontal Stabilizer and rebonding of the Horizontal Stabilizer at destination.

I have seen unknowing Cirrus buyers choose to go the containerization route, in a lot of cases the aircraft had to be scrapped when it arrived at its destination due to not properly removing the horizontal and/or no approved place for the re-bonding to take place.

Disassembling, Containerizing, and Shipping a Cirrus along with Re-assembly at destination if done Properly Including all Paperwork, Declarations, Etc. will exceed the Costs of a Ferry Flight. If the paperwork is not done properly the least it will cost you is a monatary fine, aircraft seizure or jail time see next question on CAPS Rocket.

Q: Is the Cirrus CAPS Rocket Considered an Explosive by the ATF?

A: Simple answer is "Yes" Buyers when containerizing and shipping a cirrus be aware of the rocket in the CAPS system, This will have to be Declared and removed for shipment by most all shipping companys. The solid fueled rocket is considered an explosive by the ATF and other government agencies around the world so there will be very expensive hazardous materials shipping charges and the shipper and carrier must have a Explosives Export License. There will also be lengthy approval paperwork involved ATF (USA), U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), U.S. Department Of Defence (DOD), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), U.S. Customs, Your Country's Explosives Agency, Customs, And Transportation Departments, Etc. If the CAPS rocket is not declared, peoper export paperwork from all agencies etc. in the shipment and found even installed in the aircraft during a routine x-ray of the container can equal big trouble from monatary fines to jail time for the shipper, exporter, broker, containerization facility and/or the buyer/importer.

If shipment of the rocket is allowed only a few carriers have the peoper licensing. Removal of the Rocket has to be done by a qualified service center that has the proper ATF license's and placed in qualified storage container for shipment "Estimate $3,500-$5,000 for Removal and Storage". Shipment of Rocket is generaly done seperate form aircraft and has Haz-Mat fees, Permit Fees, Licensing, Export and Import Regulatory Fees that can amount to thousands of dollars.and a Wait time for ATF, DOT, USCG and DOD Can be 9-12 Months. When the aircraft arrives at it's destination the owner must also find a qualified service center that has CAPS approval to reinstall the solid fuel rocket motor and igniter.

Another option wich also resets the 10 year CAPS Life and upgrades the obsolete rocket to the new one is to Have the CAPS system removed by a cirrus service center and sent back to cirrus for a core about $3,500-$5,000, Disassemble Airframe pack in to container Costs Vary by dismantler, Ship the Airframe to a Cirrus Service Center Price Varies by Location Averages $6,000-$10,000 have them order a new caps system for about $13,000. + haz-mat Freight price varies by country and let Cirrus deal with all the paperwork and shipping logistics. Install will cost about $7,500 - $10,000+ All said and Done After the Re-Assembly charge at the service center that cost will vary depend on the service center about $8,000 the costs to ship a used cirrus will be more than exceede the cost of a ferry flight.

Q: How much does it cost to Ferry a Used Cirrus.

A: We will use Australia and Japan for Examples. IFF's current flat all inclusive rates from lower 48 USA to Australia or Japan. (Contact IFF for Other Locations With Flat All Inclusive Rates) Pricing Valid 05/20/2014

Cirrus SR20 $23,800USD + Export Certificate Of Airworthiness (Generally Under $1,500)
Cirrus SR22 $25,800USD + Export Certificate Of Airworthiness (Generally Under $1,500)

If Aircraft is not under manufactures warranty or service contract there will be additional expenses for any required inspections or mechanical issues while enroute. There is a $300 materials charge for all Cirrus that are not equipped with ferry fuel connector at the Wing Root Non G3 Cirrus Aircraft.

Q: Do the Ferry Tanks harm or damage the aircraft.

A: No, The Ferry Tank Installation will not harm or damage the aircraft. IFF Take's exceptional care to protect all interior and exterior surfaces of the aircraft for tank installations. In Non G3 Aircraft with out Ferry Fuel Fittings in the wing root we carefully tie in to the fuel system with specific hardware that will not damage the fuel system.

Q: Do you help with Ferry Fuel System removal?

A: Generally if time allows and is requested by the client, The pilot will help your mechanics or engineers the day after arrival at destination. This a courtesy service offered by the pilot and the expenses for the extra time to stay and help come out of the pilots pocket.

Q: How much time will be placed on a used cirrus aircraft for ferrying.

A: Delivery time will vary depending upon the pickup point to the destination. We will use Australia, Japan for an example the ferry flight time from the East Coast USA about 70-80 hours, Central USA about 65-70 hours, West Coast USA about 55-60 hours. The first few hours of flight time is to our tanking facility in Mulino Oregon (4S9) during this flight time the pilot will evaluate the engine performance, oil burn, airframe, and avionics. If a discrepancy is encountered during the flight we will have a Cirrus Service Center available to take care of the issue if under warranty or service contract. If the aircraft is not under a service contract we have an A&P take care of any mechanical issues.
